What to Wear

“The best movie to watch to get some renaissance ideas would be “Shakespeare In Love”. Also, “Three Musketeers”, Dangerous Beauty, A Man For All Seasons, Elizabeth, Orlando, Cutthroat Island, and Musketeer have good period costumes.

If you are planning on making a costume or to see how it is done, here are appropriate patterns:

Simplicity

#9966 Use the The top left costume with the plaid overskirt.

#8881 This is an upperclass ren. costume

#9533 Borderline medieval but would work as Italian Ren.

#8715 Renaissance except for the sleeves - which have long bell-like flowing sleeves but these would still be fine.

#7756 Great Ren. dresses. Except the apron wouldn’t be needed unless you were working.

#8855 Irish Ren. dresses

#8913 Men’s Irish kilt or pants

#9929 Only the red dress pictured is Ren.

A great place to search for costumes and get great prices would be on ebay! Be careful about things that say Renaissance/Medieval. These are two entirely different time periods. If you find something you like, email me the link and I will give you advice on if it is a good price and how to accesorize it or any other questions you may have. If you find an item that is “SCA” you have hit the jackpot. This means that it is completely authentic. The colors of the time were earthtones or jeweltones. Almost all men and women wore a long sleeve puffy white shirt under everything. Men can find a shirt like this on ebay for $50 or less and grab a belt and baggy pants and cinch it all together and you have an a great costume. Accesorize with a beer stein or drinking mug tied to his belt and your ready to go!
